The second edition of the Tree of the Year has begun!

:cultural, emotional, social, symbolic, historic for the group presents. The jury composed of a representative of the NFB, LPO and Wild Earth met October 10, 2012 and the tree, an olive tree located in the town of Oletta, has been selected to defend the colors of Corsica. At present, the votes are open to the public, until 1 June 2013.Description of our tree.

Common Oletta
Species: Olive

Description: trunk circumference measured at 1.30 m above the ground: 10.50 m Height: 13 m Age: very difficult to determine accurately because we do not want to make coring weakening the tree.

However, the experts of the Technical Committee "remarkable tree in Corsica" felt that this monument plant has between 800 and 1000 years.

Aesthetics: The trunk is very impressive and multi-stem. The crown is very well developed (300 m²) which gives it a beautiful tree architecture to an olive tree.

This olive tree, remarkable for its size, is to our knowledge the largest of the island.

Sheltered:
The owner maintains the lawn under its cover, or multiple Corsica traditional meal, meat, cheese, canistrelli wine were tasted.
The olives are partly eaten by birds such as blackbirds, thrushes, starlings.

History: This tree is on private property, near the convent of San Francescu Oletta (XIIIth century). Among the hundreds of trees registered so far in the inventory of remarkable trees in Corsica, the members of the commission voted for this olive tree.

Comments: This tree is in excellent health status, is still in production. You can also see from the photographs the technique of harvest net practiced winter in Corsica.
